As a Dasher and an independent worker, I’m proud to serve my community – bringing people the meals, groceries, and essentials they need, when they need them. I choose this work because it gives me the freedom to support my family, pursue my goals, and earn income on my own schedule.
I shouldn’t have to choose between flexibility and access to benefits.
Right now, millions of workers like me choose more flexible ways to earn, instead of a traditional, full-time employment job. But those of us who choose alternative ways to work may lack access to benefits because our outdated laws do not recognize the realities of today’s economy. It doesn’t need to be this way.
Congress can take the first step toward expanding access to benefits and exploring ways to make benefits portable.
Removing barriers to opening up access to benefits like healthcare, retirement savings, or paid time off to independent workers would allow us to keep the flexibility that makes this work possible, without having to give up access to benefits and protections. A portable benefits system would recognize the reality of how people work today and offer real support without forcing us into rigid, one-size-fits-all employment models.
