Defend Democracy, Demand Diversity, Defeat Poverty – Stand with the Urban Leagues of Texas to  Invest in Emergency Communications Systems, Equitably Fund Disaster Preparedness & Response, Support Holistic Disaster Relief & Recovery Services, and  Improve Public Participation and Oversight

Dear [Lawmaker],

I am writing as a constituent and a supporter of the Urban Leagues of Texas (ULoT) legislative agenda to urge you to take action on policies that directly impact the well-being of Texans across our state. As a nonpartisan coalition advocating for fair governance, I implore you to support legislation that prioritizes democracy, diversity, and poverty reduction.
Defend Democracy: Protect Voting Rights & Civic Engagement
I am deeply concerned about voting restrictions such as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), which places undue burdens on eligible citizens attempting to exercise their fundamental right to vote. The requirement to provide additional citizenship documentation disproportionately affects marginalized communities and contradicts the principles of free and fair elections.
I urge you to:
Combat voter suppression by ensuring access without unnecessary barriers.
Reform discriminatory voting processes, especially for individuals with disabilities.
Prevent unjust voter purges and uphold voting eligibility protections.
Demand Diversity: Ensure All Have Access to a Healthy Quality of Life
Texas communities, particularly those in underserved areas, suffer from environmental and housing injustices. Industrial pollution disproportionately affects low-income and minority populations, exacerbating health risks and decreasing quality of life. Additionally, Texas' failure to expand Medicaid leaves millions without proper healthcare access, worsening health disparities.
I ask you to:
Improve air quality standards and increase environmental monitoring.
Expand Medicaid coverage to ensure affordable healthcare access for all.
Address disparities in maternal healthcare, including reproductive health protections.
Implement common-sense gun safety reforms to protect Texas families from firearm violence.
Defeat Poverty: Create Pathways to Stabilization & Educational Access
Access to quality education is a fundamental right, yet Texas ranks low in Pre-K funding, limiting opportunities for early childhood development. Additionally, school voucher programs threaten the integrity of public education by diverting funds away from students in need. Higher education should also be a pathway to success, yet financial and systemic barriers persist.
I call on you to:
Expand full-day Pre-K attendance and increase funding for early education.
Ensure equitable distribution of resources for all students, regardless of school choice policies.
Support tuition relief programs and equitable funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Reform criminal justice policies that perpetuate economic disenfranchisement and systemic inequities.
The Urban Leagues of Texas and its affiliates stand firm in advocating for policies that uplift all Texans. As my elected representative, I urge you to take meaningful action in the 2025 Legislative Session to uphold these priorities. Please let me know where you stand on these critical issues.
