So-called “nicotine-free generation” bans are popping up across Massachusetts, including in the town of Amherst. These misguided policies are just a way to ban all nicotine products for adults (21+), including smoke-free nicotine products like ZYN that provide alternatives to cigarettes.
Nicotine-free generation bans only impact those who are of legal age to purchase tobacco and nicotine products. They prohibit anyone who was born after an arbitrary date on a calendar from EVER being able to buy nicotine. This means, in the future, it will be illegal for nicotine consumers who are in their fifties, sixties, seventies, etc., to purchase products in Amherst. This also puts retailers and their staff in a difficult situation, having to distinguish between two groups of adult customers, but only one that can legally purchase nicotine products.
We need you to tell your Amherst Town Board of Health members that so-called nicotine-free generation bans are unfair, as they discriminate against some adults, while hurting the retailers who depend on their sales.
