Protect Access to Kratom and 7OH in Ohio!

The Ohio State Senate has proposed a ban on 7-OH. This would shut down research, criminalize responsible use, and push people to the black market.

The science is clear: 7-OH is a naturally occurring metabolite of kratom, not a synthetic drug. After hundreds of millions of uses, there are zero confirmed deaths from 7-OH alone. Peer-reviewed studies show no evidence of widespread harm and no unreasonable risk of overdose.

Ohio lawmakers must reject prohibition and instead adopt science-based regulation that protects both consumer safety and access.

Dear [Lawmaker],

I am writing to urge you to reject SB 299, the proposal to ban 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) in our state. Lawmakers may be hearing that such a ban would protect public health, but the facts do not support that claim.

The science is clear: 7-OH is not causing harm on anything like the scale that would justify prohibition. According to the Food and Drug Administration’s own data, there have been zero confirmed deaths from 7-OH alone, despite more than half a billion adult uses nationwide. If it were truly as dangerous as some claim, the numbers would show it — but they don’t.

In fact, growing research and real-world experience suggest 7-OH has potential benefits for people managing pain, anxiety, or opioid dependence — and that when used responsibly, it poses far less risk than many legal substances.

A ban will not make demand disappear. It will only drive responsible consumers to the black market, where unregulated and potentially dangerous products circulate. It will waste law enforcement resources on non-violent offenses, while doing nothing to make Ohio safer.

This proposal is driven by misinformation and fear, not science. Instead of prohibition, Ohio should pursue smart regulation — setting clear manufacturing and labeling standards, requiring product testing, and limiting youth access. That approach would protect consumers, support legitimate businesses, and keep dangerous, unregulated products off the market.
