No Casino in Tysons!

Write your lawmakers to tell them you OPPOSE a 24/7 casino in Northern Virginia. A casino in Tysons would bring thousands of more vehicles on local roads which already experience some of the worst traffic congestion in the entire country.

As a constituent, I am contacting you today to express my strong opposition to Senate Bill 756, legislation that is being considered in the Virginia General Assembly this year that would permit the construction of a casino in Fairfax County. The proposal to build a casino in Tysons is troubling and would have detrimental effects on our community.
Fairfax County, particularly in areas like Tysons, is already struggling with significant challenges such as traffic congestion and rapid development. Introducing another large-scale venue would draw in increased traffic and tourists, exacerbating these issues and further burdening our infrastructure. Our community deserves thoughtful and responsible development that prioritizes the contentment of residents over potential financial gains for developers and other stakeholders.
The initial legislation allowing casinos to be built in the Commonwealth was intended to target locations carefully selected based on their levels of need and economic distress, aiming to bring investment to underserved communities. However, with this proposal, that initiative is completely lost. Tysons is one of the state’s wealthiest regions and hardly needs such development. We are home to multimillion-dollar residences and major corporate headquarters, showcasing our already robust economic success.
What’s more, if this legislation passes, legislators in Richmond would be disregarding the wants of the local Tysons residents who would be most directly impacted by this casino development who have been outspoken against this development from the start. This would set a dangerous precedent for future developments of all kinds, and legislators would be more likely to ignore input from community members.
In light of this, I urge you to consider the genuine needs and concerns of your constituents and oppose the proposed casino legislation. Introducing a casino to our region would compromise its success and jeopardize the comfort and wellbeing of local residents.
Tysons certainly does not need this development, and we do not want it, either.

The Tysons community deserves thoughtful and responsible development that prioritizes the contentment of residents over potential financial gains for developers and other stakeholders.
 
While this proposal may appear to be a Northern Virginia issue, it raises a much broader concern for communities across the Commonwealth. Residents and local leaders in Fairfax County have been vocal in opposing this project, and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently voted against it. Moving forward anyway would show that the General Assembly is willing to override local judgment.
 
That precedent should concern every legislator, regardless of region. If the state can force a major development on a community that does not want it in Tysons, the same approach could be used elsewhere for any number of large-scale development projects.
 
I urge you to oppose Senate Bill 756, as it is forcing unwanted development on a community that has clearly said no.
