Don’t Break the Promise to Working Families!

With encouragement from the City Council, the Corpus Christi Housing Authority broke its promise to working families when it voted to terminate the Workforce Housing Opportunities Program, which provides affordable rents for Corpus Christi those earning far less than the area median income. Now, more than 1,500 families are at risk of losing their homes.

It’s time for elected and appointed officials in Nueces County to do the right thing and drop the attack on affordable housing for working families. Tell Mayor Guajardo, City Council members, CCHA commissioners, and Nueces County Commissioners to honor their contracts and stop efforts to eliminate affordable housing.

Dear [Mayor Guajardo and Council Members Barrera, Scott, Vaughn, Roy, Campos, Cantu, Paxson and Hernandez],

As a resident of Corpus Christi, I am asking you to end the efforts to eliminate the Workforce Housing Opportunities Program, which provides affordable housing options hundreds of working families depend on.
The W.H.O. Program provides stable and affordable rent, helping local workers live close to their jobs, their children’s schools, and their support systems. Ending the Program, as the City Council has requested, would make it even harder for them to remain part of the community they serve. Why are you turning your back on the working families of Corpus Christi?
Without this program, the rent of hundreds of families in our community will rise. For many, that could mean losing their homes. These people are not just numbers on paper. They are families and neighbors who are working hard to keep up with rising costs and still live in Corpus Christi.
Losing more than 1,500 affordable apartments will make an already serious housing crisis even worse and will weaken the local workforce that businesses, schools and hospitals, and a healthy economy depend on.
Please do the right thing. Ask the Corpus Christi Housing Authority to honor its contractual agreements and stand with Corpus Christi’s working families.
