Tell the EPA: Renewable Fuels Standards Must be Achievable and Free from Penalties

Urge the EPA to set realistic fuel standards that drive innovation here at home but that are based on existing American fuels capacity.

As someone who depends on affordable and reliable energy, I’m concerned that the EPA’s proposed renewable fuel requirements may go too far, too fast—potentially raising costs for families like mine.

The proposal sets volume requirements that exceed what the U.S. can currently produce domestically. At the same time, it places restrictions on many of the global feedstocks that are essential to maximizing production from U.S. refineries and meeting growing renewable fuel requirements. This combination of unrealistic production goals and penalties on imports of global fuel and feedstocks could lead to higher fuel prices for everyday consumers. While I support steadily increasing renewable fuel volumes, the EPA should be looking at volumes more in line with what was achievable in 2024, not unrealistic requirements that are well beyond domestic capability. Moving forward with the overly ambitious requirements EPA proposed, risks making energy less affordable for the very people it’s meant to benefit.

I want to see growth in renewable fuels, but that growth needs to be based on existing U.S. infrastructure capacity, free from penalties based on geography, and paced to encourage future investment without driving up costs.

Additionally, the proposal leaves out an important lower emission energy solution: co-processing. Co-processing, which involves refining renewable feedstocks alongside conventional ones, relies on existing infrastructure and should be recognized as a lower emission fuel pathway for all transportation fuels, including jet fuels.  While EPA’s proposed definition of renewable jet fuel allows for standalone refining, it would exclude jet fuels produced through co-processing. Excluding co-processing means missing a valuable opportunity to expand transportation fuel production more efficiently and at a lower cost.

I urge the EPA to set realistic requirements that reflect volumes achievable with current U.S. refining capacity, while protecting consumers and encouraging innovation and growth.
