Please Oppose the Kratom Approval Requirement Bill

Dear [Lawmaker],

I am a Maryland resident writing to respectfully urge you to oppose legislation that would require FDA or Maryland Department of Health approval for kratom products.

This bill would effectively ban natural kratom leaf in Maryland by imposing approval standards that do not currently exist under federal or state law. Natural kratom leaf is not an FDA-approved drug, and Maryland has not established an approval pathway. As written, the bill creates an impossible compliance standard for retailers and would eliminate lawful access overnight.

Presuming kratom products are contraband unless businesses can prove approval that no lawful product currently has does not improve consumer safety. It creates confusion, punishes responsible retailers, and restricts access for adults who use natural kratom responsibly.

I respectfully ask that you oppose this bill and instead consider policies that clearly distinguish natural kratom leaf from dangerous synthetic products, while implementing reasonable consumer protections.
