Support HF2585 to Require Accessible Prescription Drug Information

The Iowa Senate is currently debating HF2585. This file provides for a state-wide policy mandating that pharmacies provide blind, visually impaired, and other print disabled consumers easily accessible formats for relevant prescription information at no additional cost and within the same timeframe as for other consumers. Such a policy should minimize financial and logistical barriers, making healthcare more inclusive and equitable for everyone. Passage of this legislation would also provide blind and print disabled Iowans with greater confidence that they are using their medications safely and appropriately.

I am writing to request your support for HF 2585 providing blind and visually impaired Iowans access to relevant information about prescription medication comparable to that available to their sighted peers. Ensuring accessible prescription drug information is vital for the safety and independence of blind and visually impaired Iowans. Without clear, accessible labeling and instructions, these individuals are at greater risk for medication errors and adverse health outcomes. Passage of legislation requiring pharmacies to provide prescription information in Braille, large print, or electronic formats will empower all Iowans to manage their health safely and reduce preventable harm. Adopting the proposed bill is clearly consistent with Governor Reynolds’ emphasis on innovation within the state’s healthcare sector and the unanimous passage of the bill in the House indicates that the Iowans you represent are supportive of the bill.
