Lower Boat Taxes

South Carolina has the highest
boat property taxes in America!

Dear [Lawmaker],

After years of feeling like I am renting my boat back from the government, I am writing to respectfully ask for your support of H.3858, legislation that would address South Carolina’s boat property tax structure and eliminate duplicative outboard engine titling.
Many South Carolina boat owners have the same boats as families in neighboring states, yet we pay five times more in property taxes simply because of where we live. South Carolina is one of only a small number of states that impose a property tax on boats at all, and yet we charge the highest boat property taxes in the nation. In some cases, this burden is compounded by double taxation on outboard engines.
As the bill now comes before Senate Finance, the committee has an important opportunity to consider a fair, balanced solution. H.3858 passed the House 89 7 with strong bipartisan support and would provide responsible relief for boaters, anglers, and small businesses while improving competitiveness and access across the state.
I respectfully urge you to support H.3858 and help move this legislation forward through the Senate.
