A harmful new bill is making its way through the Legislature that would cause huge increases in health care costs for Arizonans. SB 1161 would impose heavy-handed government interference in health care — eliminating the free-market ways employers and the state work to contain the cost of health insurance and prescription drugs.
The bill would also undermine safeguards that protect patients – weakening Arizona’s high standards of quality and care, while doing nothing to lower the out-of-control drug prices set by big drug companies.
SB 1161 means higher health care costs for Arizonans – in the form of increased out-of-pocket costs on prescriptions, more expensive premiums, and higher deductibles – all while putting vulnerable patients, such as those receiving cancer treatment, at risk.
This legislation would:
- Raise prescription drug costs for Arizona patients and their families by limiting employers’ ability to provide more affordable health care options to employees and increasing costs at the pharmacy counter.
- Make it more expensive for small businesses and large employers to provide health care benefits to employees by restricting their ability to design individual high-quality, affordable plans that fit in their budgets.
- Do nothing to lower the out-of-control prescription drug prices set by big drug companies or stop big drug companies’ ongoing price hikes.
