Urge Maryland Governor Wes Moore to Condemn Antisemitism at UMD

The University of Maryland Student Government Association just passed yet another antisemitic resolution, and the UMD administration remains silent.

Urge Maryland Governor Wes Moore to make clear that antisemitism is not welcome at Maryland’s premier public university.

To members of the USM Foundation and the University of Maryland administration:

Dear Governor Moore,

I am writing to call your attention to an ongoing crisis at the University of Maryland, where the rights of Jewish, Israeli, and pro-Israel students are being gravely jeopardized. The Student Government Association (SGA) at UMD has repeatedly advanced resolutions that ostracize Jewish students and demonize Israel, the world’s only Jewish state. University leadership has failed to condemn the SGA's harmful actions.

For years, you have been a pillar of support for the American-Israeli alliance.

On October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists invaded Israel and massacred over 1,200 innocent people, including dozens of Americans, and took 251 captives to Gaza, you issued a statement of support for Israel. On the first anniversary of the attack, you had Maryland’s Government House lit yellow, and when Hamas supporters at UMD held a “vigil for Gaza” on that very anniversary, you rightly condemned the event as “inappropriate.”

In your proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2027, you maintained $10 million in funding for the Protecting Against Hate Crimes Grant Program. You have also kept in effect Maryland Executive Order 01.01.2017.25, prohibiting state executive agencies from engaging in boycotts of Israel.

Today, I ask for your support once again due to the ongoing travesty at UMD.

In Fall 2025, the UMD SGA adopted an antisemitic boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) resolution targeting Israel. The vote was held on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, which prevented Jewish students from participating in the discussion.

Later that semester, the SGA passed a resolution demanding that the university prevent former members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from speaking on campus.

The SGA also passed a third resolution outrageously labelling Israel’s defensive campaign to rescue the hostages and defeat Hamas as a “genocide.”

Last week, SGA just adopted yet another antisemitic BDS resolution. Studies have shown that antisemitism is far more likely at schools with BDS activity.

The UMD administration has failed to meaningfully respond to the antisemitic proposals being passed by the SGA. The ongoing silence implies that antisemitic activity is tolerated at UMD.

Given this situation, I ask you, as Governor, to stand with the beleaguered Jewish, Israeli, and pro-Israel community at UMD, and to make clear that BDS is not welcome at Maryland’s premier public university.
