Don’t Break the Promise to Working Families!

With encouragement from the City Council, the Corpus Christi Housing Authority broke its promise to working families when it voted to terminate the Workforce Housing Opportunities Program, which provides affordable rents for those who earn less than the local median income. If the City Council and the CCHA have their way, more than 1,500 affordable apartments will be eliminated and the families who count on their reduced rents are likely to lose their homes.

Tell Mayor Guajardo and Corpus Christi City Council members to stop their efforts to displace working families.

Dear [Mayor Guajardo and Council Members Barrera, Scott, Vaughn, Roy, Campos, Cantu, Paxson and Hernandez]],

I am writing as a resident who relies on stable and affordable rent through the Workforce Housing Opportunities Program. I am deeply concerned about the efforts to eliminate this program because it threatens the ability of hardworking families like mine to continue living in Corpus Christi.

This program has provided stability for people who keep this community running every day. Teachers, nurses, first responders, service workers, and many others, like me, depend on affordable rent to live in the city where we work. At a time when costs continue to rise and families like mine are already struggling to keep up, this program has provided critical housing options that allow us to afford rent and other necessities like food and childcare.

If this program is eliminated, protections that keep rents predictable and affordable will disappear. Over time, that will mean higher rents, fewer housing options and more working families forced out of our neighborhoods. Losing more than 1,500 affordable units will make an already serious housing crisis even worse and will weaken the local workforce that businesses, schools, and hospitals rely on.

Families like mine want to continue living in the community we serve, but without this program, we are in danger of losing our homes. Please do the right thing.  Ask the Corpus Christi Housing Authority  to honor its agreements and stand with Corpus Christi’s working families.
