Don’t Let the County Break the Promise to Working Families!

Nueces County has filed a taxpayer-funded lawsuit with the goal of eliminating a critical affordable housing program that will affect hundreds of working residents.

The Workforce Housing Opportunities Program was created to provide affordable rents for local Corpus Christi residents earning less than the area median income. If the County’s lawsuit is successful, it would eliminate more than 1,500 affordable housing units designated for working families across the city.

Your voice matters. Tell the County Commissioners to drop the lawsuit so Corpus Christi workers can afford to live in Corpus Christi!

Dear [Judge Scott and Commissioners Pusley, Gonzalez, Marez, and Chesney],

I am writing as a resident who relies on stable and affordable rent through the Workforce Housing Opportunities Program. I am deeply concerned about the lawsuit Nueces County has filed to eliminate this program because it threatens the ability of hardworking families like mine to continue living in Corpus Christi.

This program has provided stability for people who keep this community running every day. Teachers, nurses, first responders, service workers, and many others, like me, depend on affordable rent to stay in the city where we work. At a time when costs continue to rise and families like mine are already struggling to keep up, this program has made it possible to live closer to our work, schools, and support networks.

If this lawsuit succeeds, the protections that keep rents predictable and affordable will disappear. Over time, that will mean higher rents, fewer housing options and more working families forced out of our neighborhoods. Losing more than 1,500 affordable units will make an already serious housing crisis even worse and will weaken the local workforce that businesses, schools, and hospitals rely on.

I am asking you to please drop this taxpayer funded lawsuit and protect the future of workforce housing in Corpus Christi. Families like mine want to continue living in the community we serve, but we cannot do that without stable and affordable places to live.
