Support the Fight Against Harmful “Skill” Game Machines in Prince William County

Now’s the time to maintain and enforce Virginia’s ban on illegal neighborhood slot machines.

The General Assembly has banned them, the Attorney General has affirmed their illegality, and Governor Youngkin has called out the industry as a bad-faith actor.

Still, these machines continue popping up in convenience stores and restaurants, putting our families and neighborhoods at risk.

Virginia law is clear: neighborhood slot machines, or so-called “skill games,” are illegal. The General Assembly has banned them, the Attorney General has affirmed their illegality, and the Governor has called out the industry as a bad-faith actor. Yet these illegal neighborhood slot machines are still present in our communities, especially in convenience stores, bars, and restaurants.

These are not regulated gaming environments, nor should they ever become regulated gaming environments. Families, children, and those struggling with addiction are routinely exposed to casino-style machines placed without oversight or safeguards. The result? Higher rates of crime and problem-gambling, reduced revenues for Virginia’s critical services, and greater harm to vulnerable Virginians.

Their existence has allowed shady operators to illegally profit off the backs of low-income neighborhoods. In Richmond, the two zip codes with the highest poverty levels account for more than 60% of wagers. In Virginia Beach, the lowest-income zip code accounts for over 21% of bets. The targeting is deliberate, and the exploitation is real. Don’t let Prince William suffer from these “skill games”.

I encourage you to follow the lead of the Prince William County School board and oppose efforts to legalize neighborhood slot machines in your 2026 legislative agenda. Doing so aligns with public opinion and common sense and supports a safe and prosperous Prince William County.
