CONGRESS: Cosponsor the Preserving Patient Access to LTC Pharmacies Act

Representative Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) have introduced critical bipartisan legislation to protect seniors and long-term care (LTC) pharmacies. The Preserving Patient Access to LTC Pharmacies Act (H.R. 5031) will ensure patient access to essential medications and LTC pharmacy services when new Medicare-negotiated drug prices go into effect on January 1, 2026. I am writing to support our district’s long-term care (LTC) pharmacies, which play an essential role in ensuring seniors in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other long-term care settings receive timely access to medications and specialized pharmacy services. These services include around-the-clock medication access, enhanced medication management, consultant pharmacist services, and other critical patient care that protects both quality of life and patient safety.

That’s why I urge you to cosponsor the Preserving Patient Access to Long-Term Care Pharmacies Act (H.R. 5031), introduced by Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL). Also known as the “LTC Pharmacy Fix,” this bipartisan bill will ensure these vulnerable patients retain access to the care they need.

Lower drug prices is a goal we all share. However, when new Medicare Part D negotiated drug prices take effect on January 1, 2026, we have unfortunately been hearing about the serious challenges this will create for our LTC pharmacies. This shift in reimbursement will create new financial pressure for LTC pharmacies—jeopardizing their ability to sustain operations and provide essential medications and services to seniors. Without timely action from Congress, many LTC pharmacies — including those serving patients in our community — could be forced to close or reduce services, cutting off critical access to medications and care.

H.R. 5031 will establish a narrow, targeted supply fee on the prescription drugs covered under Medicare-negotiated prices. We cannot risk losing the pharmacies that care for our LTC residents.

Please cosponsor this important legislation to preserve access to high quality care for the more than two million residents in LTC facilities across the country, including those in your district.
