As your constituent and a health care provider who treats patients every day, I’m urging you to protect the enhanced premium tax credits that have helped millions of people access and afford coverage under the Affordable Care Act. With the open enrollment period fast approaching, the time to act is now. If Congress fails to extend this critical support in the upcoming government funding bill, hard working families in our community will face devastating increases in their monthly premiums starting January 1st.

If Congress does not renew these critical tax credits, individuals and families can expect to see their average net premium rise by $100 per person each month — $1,200 annually. For many, the hit will be far worse:

— A family of four making $65,000 (just over 200% of the poverty level) could see premiums rise by $2,400 annually.

— A 60-year-old couple earning $82,000 (401% of the poverty level) could see their monthly premiums triple — an increase of $18,400 a year.

If these tax credits are allowed to expire, more than 4 million Americans — including many in our community — could lose coverage overnight. Uncompensated care costs could increase by over $6 billion, further harming our communities.

As a provider, I see firsthand how essential these tax credits are in helping families access necessary and critical health care. Because of these tax credits, many working Americans can avoid choosing between health insurance and basic needs like rent or groceries. If Congress does not extend enhanced premium tax credits in the upcoming funding bill, many of my patients and your constituents — real people, small businesses, and rural communities — will suffer the consequences.

This is not a partisan issue. A recent national poll shows that voters across the political spectrum support keeping these credits in place. In a critical election year, voters are watching closely — and they expect action.

I urge you to protect your constituents and fight to extend these tax credits in the September funding bill.
