Tell Congress to Defend the National Center for Atmospheric Research

The White House has announced plans to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research, a major hub for Earth system science. Send a letter asking Congress to defend NCAR.

Dear [Lawmaker],

As a scientist and your constituent, I wish to express my strong support for the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Dismantling NCAR, which the White House recently announced, would be a loss for science and for America. I urge you instead to preserve and strengthen NCAR.

In its 65 year history, NCAR has made ground-breaking advances in weather, water, and climate sciences. Its data and research has improved severe weather forecasting, ensured enhanced transportation safety, and reduced the adverse impacts of hazards. Put simply, NCAR helps safeguard American lives and American industries, including aviation, farming, and insurance.

Breaking up NCAR will silo scientists, reduce productivity, and squander decades of institutional knowledge. In comparison, a strong NCAR will lead to further forecasting improvements that enhance our national well-being and safety.

Again, I urge you to oppose the dissolution of NCAR and work to preserve this scientific resource.
