Take a stand for Turo in B.C.
Dear [Lawmaker],
I’m a resident of British Columbia and I’m writing to voice my concern around the double tax on peer-to-peer car sharing, and ask that you work with the peer-to-peer car sharing community to address this unfair tax policy. Below are the reasons Turo is important to me as a resident of British Columbia: Share your reason in the box below. Peer-to-peer car sharing is an important resource for residents of British Columbia who use Turo as both hosts and guests. Car owners, known as hosts, share their cars to help make ends meet, save for their futures, and navigate the ongoing cost of living crisis. Guests, visitors to B.C., and locals alike, use Turo to forgo car ownership, access cars for errands, or book a mountain-ready SUV for a trip throughout our beautiful province. Peer-to-peer car sharing is a net positive for B.C. residents, putting cars to better use by reducing the overall number of cars on the road and by providing a means for hosts to manage the ongoing cost of living crisis. Unfortunately, there is unfair tax policy hurting users of peer-to-peer car sharing. Traditional rental car companies don’t pay PST on the purchase of their vehicles while Turo hosts do. Not only do Turo hosts pay their fair share of taxes on the purchase of the vehicle, additionally, the PVRT is levied on every trip resulting in the unfair double taxation of BC users of peer-to-peer car sharing. This double-taxation creates an unlevel playing field that disadvantages the little guys, while giving large rental car corporations, many of which are based in the United States, a significant tax break. I ask that you please take action to address this unfair double taxation in the upcoming provincial budget.
Sincerely,
______
