Maryland’s promise is simple: We leave no one behind. But that promise rings hollow when Jewish Marylanders must worship, study, and gather under fear.
Antisemitism is surging both nationally and in our own backyard. In 2023, Maryland ranked fifth per capita for antisemitic incidents, with reports up 227% from the previous year. Across the United States, antisemitic incidents have skyrocketed nearly 900% in less than a decade.
Jewish families and congregations are forced to pay for armed guards, security cameras, and safety training just to feel safe in their own houses of worship. This is unacceptable. Protecting faith communities should be a shared civic responsibility, not a financial burden placed on those being targeted.
It is time for Maryland to lead with action, not just words.
