MAYOR MAMDANI MUST ACT TO HALT THIS DANGEROUS HEALTH CARE CONTRACT

New York City is going to gut municipal health insurance by turning it over to UnitedHealthcare – putting municipal workers’ and retirees’ care at risk. This dangerous shift would massively disrupt care, lock people out of trusted hospitals as systems refuse United contracts, and subject patients to more denials, delays, and prior authorization roadblocks when they need care most.

Tell Mayor Zohran Mamdani to act immediately to halt this proposal and protect the care NYC workers and retirees have earned.

The transition to a United Healthcare-administered plan could cause massive disruption to care for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers. Major hospital systems across the country – including here in New York – are increasingly refusing to renew contracts with UnitedHealthcare, putting provider access at serious risk. At the same time, UnitedHealthcare is widely known for high rates of care denials and burdensome prior authorization requirements, creating new barriers to timely and necessary medical care.

For generations, city employees and retirees have relied on their current health care plan to access care for themselves and their families. The existing plan offers comprehensive benefits and one of the largest provider networks available. By switching to a self-insured model, the new plan would strip away critical state consumer protection laws, could increase out-of-pocket costs, and threatens workers’ and retirees’ access to the providers they know and trust.

Changing health care plans for municipal employees is not a small inconvenience – it is a massive disruption that will impact the health of New York City’s 750,000 workers, retirees, and their families who have earned their benefits and deserve consistent access to comprehensive care.

As mayor, you have both the responsibility and opportunity to stop this harmful transition. We urge you to stop this contract and ensure that any changes to municipal health care are transparent, accountable, and centered on workers and retirees.
