AI is already causing real harm to kids and the public, and the federal government has failed to act.
Teens have taken their own lives and inflicted self harm because of AI chatbots. Increasingly we are seeing AI replace counsel from parents or professionals as 12% of teens turn to AI for mental health support. Our larger communities also face threats. China has used American AI to conduct cyberattacks against the United States, and experts warn that AI tools could soon be used to make biological weapons.
We’ve been here before with social media, and waiting too long to act caused serious, long- term damage. Send a letter to your legislators encouraging them to support LB 1083 and put simple, common-sense safeguards in place now. The bill doesn’t ban AI or create burdensome regulations — it just requires large AI companies to follow through on their promises to publish safety plans and report serious safety incidents to the authorities.
