Reject SNAP Restrictions That Hurt Georgia Grocers & Residents. REJECT HB 947.

As grocers in Georgia, we’re proud to serve our communities and contribute to our state’s economy.

But new legislation that restricts which products families can purchase using SNAP benefits would be damaging for our businesses and our customers.

Under this bill, grocery stores and employers would be forced to adapt to confusing and complex new restrictions – from grocery clerks, business owners, to the food industry as a whole. This opens the system up to confusion that could invite fraud and puts employers and jobs at risk – all for a bill that doesn’t save taxpayers money or improve the health of residents. This costs real money for an industry already struggling with increased costs at every turn.

On top of that, the government would be restricting Georgians’ freedom to decide what is best for their families by restricting what they can and cannot purchase in stores.

Dear [Lawmaker],

I’m writing to you as an employee of $q1:: in $q2:: to strongly oppose legislation in Georgia that would force grocers and employers to undertake massive and costly new mandates that will set us up for failure. HB 947 would restrict the freedom that our customers have to choose the food and beverages that are best for them, and will likely hurt grocers and employers across the state.

Our industry is crucial to our communities. We help Georgians feed their families every day and our stores fuel our state’s economy.

HB 947 would hurt our industry. Grocery stores would be forced to determine which foods and beverages people could buy at checkout. Grocery clerks would have to handle this burden in the checkout line, disrupting and slowing down customer traffic. Many local stores would have to purchase new equipment to scan products. That will raise costs that will likely be passed along to customers as higher prices. All this creates inefficiencies and confusion, which allow for mistakes and fraud to take place in the system. It simply doesn’t work.

Businesses across Georgia are already facing a tough economic environment. Small businesses and local producers, like those who operate in a food desert, are already operating with tight margins. Higher operating costs from this legislation could mean reduced work hours, layoffs, and closures as businesses have to adapt to new, complex and costly systems.

Please stand with me and grocers across Georgia in opposing this harmful government overreach and ineffective bill that will cost the state and our local businesses too much. Please reject HB 947.
