Oppose Costly, Inefficient EPR Legislation That Will Hurt New York’s Beverage Industry

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation being considered in Albany aims to improve recycling across New York. But unfortunately, this legislation takes an unprecedented, costly and inefficient approach that will hurt hardworking New Yorkers and local small businesses serving us every day.

There is a better way to improve recycling across our state that should be considered that focuses on efficiency, consumer convenience, waste reduction and financial stability without raising costs.

I am writing to you as a proud New Yorker, urging you to reject the harmful Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation that would severely impact families, workers and businesses across the state.

This proposal will have significant consequences for local businesses across New York. Grocery stores and distributors will be faced with higher fees and costs that will then be passed down to consumers like me. And consumers will see everyday products pulled from the shelves due to drastic measures in the bill that ban certain products or limit the choices our families can make when we shop for groceries, personal care or home improvement products.

Costs in New York, particularly on groceries and housing, are already out of control. We simply can’t afford new legislation that drives up prices without making our lives better. There is a better way to reduce packaging waste without raising costs for hardworking New York families and local businesses. Our legislators should be focused on bringing down costs, not needlessly making it harder on New Yorkers.

I urge you to oppose this harmful legislation so that we can find real solutions that will support our environment, improve New York’s recycling system and protect hardworking families and workers across our state.
