Demand Harvard Follow Its Own Rules

Recently, Harvard University allowed the Palestine Solidarity Committee to erect an antisemitic, pro-Hamas “Wall of Resistance” on campus. But when former Harvard president Lawrence H. Summers gave a speech criticizing the Wall’s morally repugnant messaging, Harvard Deans stepped in to disrupt his speech.

Condemn Harvard for this blatant bias and demand that Harvard consistently enforce its own free speech rules.

To the administration of Harvard University:

Harvard University claims to be committed to free speech. This apparently explains why you allowed the Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) to erect a “Wall of Resistance” on campus this week that demonizes and vilifies Israel, promotes pro-Hamas propaganda, and calls for the destruction of Israel.

However, as recent events have shown, Harvard does not consistently protect free speech or enforce its campus rules neutrally.

The antisemitic Wall was permitted to be up from October 19 to 23 (five days), despite the Office of Common Spaces stating that exhibits are permitted for up to three days.

Ahead of the Wall’s planned removal on October 23, former Harvard president Lawrence H. Summers gave a speech in front of the wall criticizing its antisemitic and morally repugnant messaging. He denounced the administration for allowing the Wall, saying the university wouldn’t allow a similar installation promoting the doctrines of the Ku Klux Klan.

At that point, Harvard Dean of Undergraduate Education Amanda Claybaugh and Dean of Students Thomas G. Dunne interrupted Summers’ speech. Claybaugh claimed to be “defending the University rules.”

By disrupting President Larry Summers’s speech, Harvard administrators — led by Dean Amanda Claybaugh — once again proved that the university refuses to enforce its own code of conduct fairly or consistently. This blatant double standard endangers Jewish students and undermines Harvard’s stated commitment to free expression.

It’s time for Harvard to live up to its own rules. We call on President Alan Garber, the Harvard Corporation, and the Board of Overseers to condemn Dean Claybaugh’s actions, protect Jewish students, and ensure that the university’s code of conduct applies to everyone, without exception.
