Urge Your Senator to Oppose Failed Housing Policies

Virginia is in the middle of a housing crisis, and our General Assembly is more interested in creating the illusion of housing affordability rather than fixing the root causes. Your state senator is considering a bill that would allow cities and towns to artificially cap rents. As proven in other places that have tried rent control policies, this will do nothing to address our housing supply deficit. Tell them to oppose this bill!

Dear [Lawmaker],

As a Virginia voter, I urge you to oppose SB 355. We are in the middle of a housing crisis with not enough homes available to our growing population. Because of inflation, the cost of goods is not keeping pace with incomes as it is so property owners will be running deficits if they want to keep up with maintenance and repairs. Operating at a loss will disincentivize housing development in Virginia at a time when the Commonwealth is already facing a severe inventory shortage.

Property owners are facing rising property insurance and tax rates, in addition to general maintenance. The inevitable result is deferred maintenance that will undermine housing conditions and long-term stability.

We have seen rent control policies fail every place they have been enacted. These policies offer the illusion of affordability without addressing the root-causes such as the supply and cost drivers of this current housing crisis.

I am urging you to vote no on SB 355 and find solutions to the underlying issues.
