PepsiCo Employees: It's Time to Modernize New York's Bottle Deposit System

It’s time for meaningful reform to strengthen New York’s bottle deposit system and we can do it without increasing costs for New Yorkers.

Dear [Lawmaker],

I am writing to you as an employee of PepsiCo and one of 14,000 workers employed by the beverage industry in New York to express my strong support for Senate Bill 7722A/Assembly Bill 8391. Our current bottle deposit system isn’t working. It’s outdated, financially unstable, and recycling rates are stagnant. Now, we have an opportunity to reform the system without raising unnecessary costs on New Yorkers and local businesses. It’s why we strongly support S.7722A/AB 8391. These bills will improve recycling, support New York businesses without jeopardizing any beverage industry jobs.
New York has a proud history of leading on environmental progress. But our outdated bottle deposit system is no longer keeping up, making it one of the nation's least efficient systems. We cannot keep doubling down on this system, it need modernization.
S.7722A/AB 8391 deliver real reforms that make it more efficient and effective without forcing families to unnecessarily pay more at the grocery store or harming our industry.
Millions of empty containers come into New York, for which no deposit was paid, costing businesses, consumers and the state millions of dollars in fraudulent refunds and fees paid. This fraud is costing our state tens of millions of dollars per year. 
Now is the time to finally address the real problems plaguing our recycling system. That is why I stand with my fellow employees in the beverage industry in urging you to support S.7722A/AB 8391.
