Missouri: Hearing Scheduled for School Safety Bill
Dear [Lawmaker],
As a fellow resident of Missouri, I encourage you to SUPPORT SB 886 in your committee. Senate Bill 886 requires each public school, charter school, and private school to designate a school protection officer to be present at all times when children are on the school campus, as provided in the act. In addition to teachers and administrators, a school may also designate a retired law enforcement officer or retired member of the Armed Forces of the United States to serve as a volunteer school protection officer. It also authorizes a tax credit for teachers, administrative personnel, and athletic coaches at public, private, and charter schools to purchase a firearm or pay for an eligible firearms safety course. Additionally, SB 886 adds an annual Eddie Eagle Gunsafe training course on firearm safety provided by the National Rifle Association to K-8 schools. These NRA models were selected because they are already being used by schools throughout the country. Several other states and thousands of families already utilize Eddie Eagle to teach young children what to do if they ever come across a firearm: “STOP! Don’t touch. Run away. Tell a grown-up.” This program has been recognized by law enforcement, education, and healthcare groups for its effectiveness in preventing accidents with firearms. To date, over 33 million children have completed this training. Again, I encourage you to SUPPORT SB 886. Thank you for all that you do for our state.
Sincerely,
______
