SUPPORT SB 27 / OPPOSE HB 83
Dear [Lawmaker],
As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to SUPPORT Senate Bill 27 and OPPOSE House Bill 83. SB 27 provides a commonsense exemption from Maryland’s seven-day waiting period for law enforcement officers, retired officers in good standing, and holders of a Maryland Permit to Wear, Carry, or Transport a Handgun. These individuals have already undergone extensive background checks and training, making the waiting period unnecessary. Supporting this legislation ensures that responsible, vetted gun owners are not subjected to redundant restrictions. HB 83, also known as the Family and Law Enforcement Protection Act, would dramatically expand firearm and license surrender tied to civil protective orders without requiring any finding that a firearm was used or threatened. The bill forces respondents to surrender firearms and credentials within 24 hours or submit sworn affidavits under penalty of perjury and directs law enforcement toward compliance checks, search warrants, and home firearm seizures stemming from civil proceedings. This bill unfairly targets law-abiding gun owners and erodes due process protections. Please take action to SUPPORT SB 27 and OPPOSE HB 83. Thank you for protecting the rights of Maryland gun owners.
Sincerely,
______
