Dear [Lawmaker],

Rent control has failed to increase the quantity or quality of affordable housing from New York to San Francisco. Housing affordability is indeed a significant challenge facing many Illinois residents, but as your constituent, I encourage you to support affordable housing solutions for Illinois, while avoiding the unintended, negative consequences of rent control. Illinois must reject this flawed policy.

The number of families renting their homes stands at an all-time high and is growing, but supply is falling short of demand. Imposing rent control or rent stabilization mandates in any form will only further exacerbate the problem by discouraging must-needed investment in rental housing throughout the state. Bills such as SB 1260, HB 3687, HB 3526, and HB 3828 would all work against the principles of bringing more affordable housing to communities that need it most. Instead, we need to continue focusing on meaningful, sustainable solutions, engaging a range of stakeholders, as has been done with success in past legislative sessions.

Over the past few years, the General Assembly wisely created grant programs, tax credits, and financial incentives that have already begun to increase the supply of affordable housing statewide to help low-income families access housing. Let’s not derail this momentum by enacting harmful and misguided policies like rent control.

Rent control is not a long-term, sustainable solution. Thank you for your efforts that will help create neighborhoods for everyone in Illinois.
