As employees in the Georgia beverage industry, we’re proud to serve our communities and contribute to our state’s economy.

But new legislation aimed at restricting products for certain consumers using SNAP benefits would put the government in charge of deciding what Georgia families can and cannot purchase. The bill creates confusing restrictions that could harm retailers and employers in the state by adding significant burdens and potentially higher costs without saving taxpayers money or improving health.

Tell Georgia lawmakers to reject SNAP restrictions and protect Georgians’ freedom to choose what is best for their families!

Dear [Lawmaker],

I’m writing to you as an employee of $q1: : in $q2: : to strongly oppose SNAP restrictions legislation in Georgia. This bill would put the government in charge of decisions that should be left up to families and create a costly system that will lead to ineffective and confusing restrictions that could create confusion and fraud in the system.

Our industry is ingrained across Georgia. We support our families, build and better our communities, strengthen our economy and serve many other businesses – big and small. However, new legislation that restricts options for SNAP recipients by removing eligibility for certain products will have a significant impact on so many across our state.

Georgians who lean on SNAP are hardworking families looking to make ends meet in a tough economy, and these families deserve the dignity to choose what's right for them. The government should not dictate what families can and cannot purchase.

On top of that, the bill would disrupt the operations of many grocery and convenience stores by creating an untested and costly system that requires grocery clerks to enforce which products are allowed or not allowed to be purchased using benefits. This will create a complicated system that could lead to errors, system abuse and inconsistency with one store allowing the purchase of certain items while others do not.

With more than 20,000 new food items being introduced into the marketplace each year, many local businesses do not have the technology and resources to keep up. These costs will presumably put a significant financial strain on many local businesses and would likely be passed on to consumers with higher prices, increasing families’ grocery bills.

If the state wants to improve health outcomes, reduce fraud, or save taxpayers' money – there are better ways to do so. This bill achieves none of those outcomes and instead creates a complex system that allows the government to take away fundamental choices from people who are just trying to make ends meet.

Please stand with me and the beverage industry in opposing these harmful policies and rejecting HB 947.
