How can the Clear Horizons bill be bad for every New Mexican? The devil is in the details.
Dear [Lawmaker],
Please vote no on SB 18. I support efforts to diversify New Mexico’s economy and improve our quality of life, including public health, which is why I’m concerned about the potential unintended consequences of SB 18. The state’s methane reduction success proves that progress can be made without sacrificing economic stability. Policies that maintain a strong revenue base while driving innovation will better support long-term goals like job growth and healthcare access. Oil and gas revenues continue to play a critical role in funding healthcare programs, rural hospitals, and Medicaid services. Even with that funding, our communities struggle with limited access to healthcare due to persistent provider shortages. Access to healthcare in our state is inexplicably tied to oil and gas revenues. The economic impacts of the bill will also be felt on a personal level - the affordability of electricity. If production declines or shifts out of state due to unworkable regulatory timelines, the loss of revenue would make it harder to expand healthcare access and recruit providers and increase the price of electricity. The unintended consequences are vast and will be felt by every single New Mexican. Please vote no on SB 18.
Sincerely,
______
