Urgent: Tell Colorado Legislators to Keep Safety Cameras in Our State
License plate reader (LPR) cameras are crucial to solving crimes and have been used to recover five kidnapped in Colorado in just the last few months alone.
But a proposed Senate bill (SB 70) goes too far and would render LPRs unusable in Colorado.
This bill would:
- Require law enforcement to receive a warrant to access images of vehicles on public roads older than 24 hours, making it impossible to use LPRs in most cases.
- Establish a five day retention schedule before LPR data must be deleted, not giving law enforcement nearly enough time to start an investigation.
- Prevent nearly all interagency data sharing and collaboration, even between neighboring towns and across Colorado agencies.
Reject this legislation and support a more common sense regulatory framework that our state deserves. Smart LPR legislation can protect both our safety and civil liberties.
