The Devil Is in the Details.
The Clear Horizons bill threatens to gut New Mexico’s economy and drive up the cost of living for every family in this state. No community, household, or corner of New Mexico would be spared the fallout.
We all want clean air and a healthy environment—but SB 18 goes far beyond responsible environmental policy. It imposes unrealistic, unworkable mandates that will send utility prices soaring and push critical industries out of New Mexico.
Let’s be clear: no major industrial economy can meet the demands of this bill as written. If oil and gas production is forced out, New Mexico loses billions in revenue overnight. That loss directly threatens funding for childcare for all, higher teacher pay, first responders, healthcare, infrastructure, and public safety.
This isn’t hypothetical. It’s math.
New Mexico is already #1 in methane reduction while producing at record levels. We’ve proven that environmental progress and economic strength can go hand‑in‑hand. SB 18 ignores that success and replaces it with ideology and extreme timelines disconnected from reality.
Lawmakers in Santa Fe need a reality check. New Mexicans should not be forced to pay higher bills, lose jobs, and sacrifice essential services for a bill that doesn’t reduce global emissions—it just exports jobs and poverty.
We cannot allow the extreme consequences of the Clear Horizons bill to fall on New Mexico’s families.
