Dear [Lawmaker],
Decades of underfunding and neglect have pushed Illinois roads to the brink. Highways are deteriorating faster than they can be repaired. Bridges are aging into dangerous territory. Intersections that should have been modernized years ago now put drivers at daily risk. State transportation data makes the problem impossible to ignore: • In the Chicago region, roughly one third of all roads are rated in fair or poor condition. • Downstate, that number climbs to nearly 45 percent. For the union men and women who build, maintain, and safeguard this infrastructure, these numbers aren’t abstract. They see the consequences up close — the crumbling pavement, the failing bridges, the dangerous work zones, and the rising risks to the public. They know exactly what it takes to keep Illinois moving, and they know how far behind we’ve fallen. This isn’t a distant warning, it’s the daily reality for working families, commuters, small businesses, and farmers across Illinois. And it’s the daily challenge for the skilled tradespeople who are ready to rebuild these roads but cannot do it without sustained, reliable investment. Illinois cannot afford to let this crisis deepen. The need is urgent, the consequences are real, and the message from union workers and communities across the state is unmistakable: we must renew Illinois roads. A stronger, safer, more competitive Illinois depends on empowering the trained, certified, union workforce that stands ready to repair what decades of delay have allowed to crumble. We urge you to prioritize downstate road and bridge funding and ensure that long delayed projects finally receive the resources they need. Thank you for your leadership and for standing with the men and women who keep Illinois moving.
