Dear [Lawmaker],

As a Nebraska small-business leader, I am writing to express my opposition to LB 1025.  By taxing social media platforms based on the data they collect, LB 1025 will effectively tax the data-powered social media ads that Nebraska small businesses rely on to connect with customers, compete, and grow.

Social media platforms use data to ensure our ads reach the people who are most likely interested in our products. That makes the ads affordable and effective — helping us find customers, grow, and compete with larger companies. A tax on social media data collection — like all taxes — will raise costs for consumers. In this case, the consumers are thousands of small Nebraska businesses like mine who purchase data-powered social media advertisements.

Because it will increase our advertising costs, LB 1025 will force me to either reduce our marketing efforts and scale back growth and hiring, or raise prices for our customers. Both would be bad for Nebraska’s small businesses, workforce, and economy.

I fully support raising funds to strengthen Nebraska’s juvenile mental health services, and I appreciate the intent behind LB 1025. But I urge you to pursue a solution that achieves this goal without increasing costs for Nebraska’s small businesses and the communities we serve.
