Oppose Nashville’s Anti-Israel Resolution

On Yom Kippur eve, Metro Council Member Ginny Welsch (District 16) introduced an offensive, inaccurate and biased resolution (RS2025-1547) accusing the State of Israel of genocide. This proposal, which ignores the October 7, 2023 massacre and Hamas’s ongoing war crimes, is scheduled for a vote on Thursday, October 9th.

This resolution is far outside the proper role of our City Council. Nashville’s elected leaders are entrusted with addressing urgent local concerns such as public safety, infrastructure, housing, and economic development, not adjudicating international conflicts. By presenting a one-sided narrative and using inflammatory terms like “genocide,” it fuels division, emboldens violent actors, and erases the atrocities committed against the Jewish people.

At a time when our city should be focused on unity, this resolution risks turning neighbor against neighbor. It is a misuse of taxpayer dollars and an affront to Nashville’s diverse community—particularly offensive coming during the Jewish High Holidays and the second anniversary of October 7th, the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

I am writing to urge you to vote NO on Resolution RS2025-1547. The resolution is one-sided, biased, relies on untimely and inaccurate information, and falsely accuses Israel of genocide while ignoring the atrocities of Hamas. Not only is the resolution beyond the scope of municipal action, but it will also divide the local community in harmful ways while doing nothing to solve the complex problems in the Middle East.   
True leadership should seek common ground, protect all residents, and foster unity here at home. This resolution does the opposite. Nashville should be a city that condemns terrorism, demands the release of hostages, and promotes peace, not one that fuels division through inflammatory rhetoric. Instead, this resolution condemns Israel and blames it for defending itself against the October 7th atrocities and fighting against an enemy that hides among civilians, shoots its own people, steals humanitarian aid, and commits horrific atrocities, including its continued holding of 48 hostages in unspeakably horrific conditions.   
Israel recently agreed to a proposal developed by the United States in consultation with several Arab countries to enter into an immediate ceasefire, surge humanitarian aid into Gaza, facilitate the rebuilding of Gaza, and ultimately remove its troops from the enclave.  Those are not the actions of a country engaged in genocide but rather the actions of a country seeking to end the war, see the hostages return home, and provide lasting security for its people.  Hamas has not yet agreed to these terms, and if any action were to be taken, it should focus on getting Hamas to lay down its arms and release the hostages now for the sake of all people in the region.   
Nashville’s City Council should not waste taxpayer resources on symbolic foreign policy grandstanding. Please reject this misguided resolution and stand with our community in fostering compassion, unity, and truth.
