Here’s why:
Why are costs lower for electric heating?  Because heat pumps are three times more efficient than furnaces and boilers that burn fossil fuels.
Natural gas prices for NJ households are increasing as we approach winter 2025 and are projected to increase further in 2026.
S249 would make it easier and more affordable for New Jersey households and businesses to make the switch to electric heating. This choice could save households hundreds on their annual energy bills while also reducing air pollution in homes.
Fossil fuel heating equipment releases health-harming pollutants like benzene and nitrogen oxides (NOx) that directly contribute to the formation of smog, exacerbating health risks for children, the elderly, and residents with pre-existing conditions. In fact, children who grow up in homes with gas stoves are 42% more likely to develop asthma symptoms!
S249 would ALSO help us reduce local pollution. Replacing a gas furnace with an electric heat pump cuts climate pollution from the average New Jersey home by 33% in the first year and 59% over the lifetime of the equipment.
