Oppose AB 1743

Dear [Lawmaker],

As a fellow California resident and your constituent, I respectfully urge you to OPPOSE AB 1743.

AB 1743 would expand government access to sensitive personal information contained in California’s firearm ownership databases. These records include identifying details collected from individuals exercising their constitutional rights and were originally provided to the state for limited law enforcement purposes.

California has already demonstrated an inability to adequately safeguard this information. In 2022, the California Department of Justice exposed the personal data of thousands of firearm owners and concealed carry permit holders in a widely reported breach. Expanding access to these databases only increases the risk that sensitive personal information could again be improperly disclosed.

Gun owners should not have to sacrifice their privacy for exercising a constitutional right. I respectfully urge you to OPPOSE AB 1743 when it comes before the Assembly Public Safety Committee.
