Dear [Lawmaker],
I urge you to say NO to the proposed transportation funding package. It would send a massive amount of new revenue to the Oregon Department of Transportation, a department plagued by huge cost overruns and budgeting errors. Meanwhile, the proposal’s accountability measures would do too little to ensure that ODOT spent new dollars wisely. This month’s special session was sold as a chance to fund road maintenance and safety. Yet it would double the payroll tax paid by all workers in Oregon to fund public transit, which has nothing at all to do with road maintenance and safety. Following years of soaring inflation, Oregonians are struggling to make ends meet. Doubling this tax would shrink their paychecks even as it forced rural Oregonians who have no access to public transit to subsidize large systems in Portland, Salem and other cities. The transportation package is excessive and unfair, and it would do too little to improve ODOT’s competence and efficiency. Oregon needs well-maintained roads, but this proposal would just take taxpayers for a ride! Please vote NO.
Sincerely,
______
