Support HB 4969 — Protect Michigan Consumers and Ensure Safe Kratom Access
Dear [Lawmaker],
On behalf of Michigan kratom consumers and advocates, we urge you to support and cosponsor HB 4969, legislation that establishes sensible, science-based regulation of natural kratom products in our state. This bill protects both consumers and responsible businesses by creating a clear framework for kratom production, testing, and sales. Beginning January 1, 2027, HB 4969 would: Require manufacturers and retailers to obtain a state license. Mandate product testing and certification to ensure natural kratom sold in Michigan is free from contamination or adulteration, and is indeed natural. Ban concentrated synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) opioid products. Require accurate labeling with alkaloid content, warning statements, and age restrictions (21+ only). Empower the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to enforce standards that protect consumer safety while allowing responsible access. HB 4969 strikes the right balance: it protects consumers from unsafe or synthetic products while preserving access to natural kratom leaf, which thousands of Michiganders safely and responsibly use as part of their daily wellness routines. Michigan should follow the lead of the FDA which has called for concentrated synthetic 7-OH products to be scheduled as a controlled substance. The FDA also made it clear that natural kratom is not subject to the FDA’s actions, and has minimal health concerns. We urge you to stand with Michigan consumers—not with those who profit from unregulated or unsafe products—and support HB 4969. Your constituents’ voices matter. Here’s what kratom means to me: [Add your personal story here — how kratom has improved your life, helped with wellness, or provided a safer alternative for you or someone you know.] Thank you for your leadership and your commitment to protecting consumer choice and safety in Michigan
Sincerely,
