Tell Congress: We Need Permitting Reform Now
Dear [Lawmaker],
I am writing as a concerned constituent who has seen the rising cost and demand for energy across our country. While we’ve taken important steps forward by enacting pro-growth tax policies and expanding access to domestic natural resources, that’s only half the battle. To truly meet our energy needs and secure our economic future, we must unlock the infrastructure that delivers this energy to the American people. For years, the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) has been used as a tool to create unnecessary delays that slow down or even derail critical energy projects. Inconsistent agency application, legal challenges, and shifting priorities from administration to administration have resulted in a permitting process that is anything but predictable. The same is true of Section 401 of the Clean Water Act, which some states have exploited to block energy projects entirely. America has the supply and the demand—but not the greenlight to build the infrastructure that connects them. New energy infrastructure projects are too often buried in years of paperwork and litigation before a single shovel hits the ground. Faster permitting processes could not only help facilitate oil and natural gas development but also the deployment of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) as well as the building of carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen infrastructure. It’s time to move from gridlock to greenlight. That means modernizing the permitting process to be more timely, efficient, and consistent across federal and state agencies. Common-sense reforms to NEPA and the Clean Water Act will help ensure we can build the pipelines, transmission lines, and facilities needed to deliver affordable, reliable, and secure energy to communities across the country. America’s energy future depends on smart, forward-looking permitting reform. I urge you to support efforts to modernize these outdated laws and empower our energy infrastructure to meet the challenges ahead.
Sincerely,
______
