The Maryland General Assembly is considering legislation that will raise prices on everyday beverages and groceries, increasing already too-expensive groceries across the state.

We have seen the impact these taxes have in other places. They drive hardworking families away from local businesses, which leads to job losses in our industry. These added costs do not improve public health, fail to address environmental concerns in a meaningful way, and simply make life more expensive for working people already struggling to afford the cost of living in Maryland.

As employees who care about the communities where we live and work, we’re committed to taking action to stop this harmful bottle bill – and encourage you to stand with us.

Dear [Lawmaker],

My name is $q1:: and I am writing as an employee of $q2::, a proud member of the beverage industry here in Maryland, to express my concern and opposition to the proposed Maryland Bottle Bill (SB 342). While I appreciate the goal of protecting our state’s environment, this bill would increase costs and create complications for companies like mine, which would very likely have a direct impact on workers like me.

The beverage industry plays an important role across our state, but beverage companies have already been hit hard by inflation and ongoing economic downturns. By adding new, higher costs and administrative duties, this bill could pose real challenges for our industry and for employees like me, worsening our situation.

We all want to see Maryland thrive and are committed to reducing litter and keeping our environment clean. Our bottles are 100% recyclable, and as we continue to innovate our products to deliver for our communities every day, we will support policies that provide a better way to support our environment as well as maintain a strong footing the consumers and workers across Maryland. Unfortunately, this bill does not accomplish that.

We are proud that our company continues to invest in Marylanders by providing family-supporting careers for thousands of our residents. The men and women of the beverage industry have been living and working in Maryland communities for decades.

This is why today I am standing with my colleagues to urge you to oppose the harmful Maryland Bottle Bill and to stand with the local workers and beverage companies who are vital to the strength of our state.
