Dear [Council Member],

As a Chicago retailer, I am very concerned about a proposal that would impose new taxes in the city on nicotine pouches like ZYN. $q1::  I own a convenience store in the city that brings much-needed revenue to Chicago, as well as serving a vital need for our customers. I urge you to stand up for me and my business and reject any new taxes on nicotine pouches in the proposed FY2026 city budget.

Oral nicotine pouches provide an alternative to nicotine consumers who are seeking a replacement for traditional tobacco products, like cigarettes, that are known to cause more harm. The state of Illinois already $q2::  has an excessively high tax on nicotine products, including smoke-free products that could help people who smoke leave cigarettes behind. An additional tax on nicotine pouches could $q3::  discourage my customers from considering smoke-free alternatives to their existing tobacco use or drive them to retail outlets in other cities to purchase their products for a lower price.

As your constituent, I strongly urge you to oppose this proposed tax and as a retailer, I will be following this issue closely.
